NAAMKARAN SANSKAAR

The first that that comes to mind after the birth of a baby is to name it, and the process of naming a new born is known as “Naamkaran Sanskaar”. Nama means Name, and Karana means To Create.

Naamkaran Sanskaar is a ritual performed in every Indian religion after the birth of a baby, it is believed that this ceremony is performed on the 10th or 12th day after the birth of a baby. This ritual is performed in the presence of family and friends for their blessings for the newborn. Some scripts suggest that the naming ceremony should be done on the first new moon or full moon.

Sanskaar Vidhi:- On this auspicious ceremonial day, they bathe the infant and dress in new garments, their parents announce their formal name and let others socialize with the baby. According to Nakshatra at the time of the baby’s birth, some specific alphabets are chosen for baby names which proves to be lucky for the newborn. The baby is then given a name starting with the letter. Usually, the aunt of the baby (paternal side) whispers the name three times in the right ear of the baby.

Vedic rituals:- Rig Veda prescribes the four components of giving a name:

  • The Nakshatra name
  • The name of the Deity of the month
  • The family’s deity name
  • The Name given by parents

Pujan:- This Naam Karan puja is accompanied by Hawan, the brahmans offer prayer to the deities and the spirits of forefathers to bless and protect the child, and then the child is given to his father’s sister(bua) who whispers the selected name, his gotra, in the baby’s ear and afterward the bua make baby taste Honey as it is considered auspicious in Hindu religion.

Kundli:- The ceremony of Naamkaran is auspicious and holds great significance as it is the first ceremony in a baby’s life. The day itself is also a day when the baby’s kundli is prepared and kept in front of the family deity to seek blessings.
