Sawan Month

The people of India are very much fond of celebrating different Gods and Goddesses that connect them to the spiritual realm and their souls. Every country has different cultures and traditions that they follow to create balance and unity but many countries have failed to retain their traditions. But in India, people are connected to one another because of their customs and culture.

The month of Sawan is one of the most celebrated months in India. Sawan is the fifth month of the year according to the Hindu Calender. Although, we celebrate Sawan month for one month only every year but as we all know that every four-year gap brings a leap year. In leap year we have 366 days for the whole year and normally we have 365 days. Something like that happens in the Hindu calendar where we have 13 months after every three years. The year 2023 is the year when we have 13 months according to the Hindu Calender. Sawan month which is usually celebrated for just a month, in 2023 will be staying for two months with us.

Why Sawan Month is Special?

In India, we have Gods and Goddesses to worship who are connected to the festivals we celebrate. That generates sentiments within our hearts and makes us feel connected to our homeland. Among all the important months and dates we celebrate Sawan month is one of the most auspicious and important because during this month people celebrate so many different things. This is the month in which people worship lord Shiva and do fasting on Mondays (Somwaar). Monday fasting is important to impress lord Shiva because Monday is the representative of the Moon and the very first arrival of Lord Shiva on Earth was possible because of the Moon God.

Devi Sati arranged a Maha Mrityunjaya for the sake of the Lord and also to invite him to Earth. That initiative was a success as Lord Shiva stepped on Earth for the first time at Somanth Jyotirlinga. That day Lord Shiva let Moon have a place on his Head as an auspicious jewel and his curse of being vanished completely was reduced to just 15 days a month. That is why the Moon revolves around Earth and we see half of it for 15 days and only at night of  Purnima, we can witness the complete Moon.

Also, Lord Shiva is the God of spirits and souls, he is the power who controls our inner energy. Fasting is something that helps us to get our senses under control and gather them in one place. If you concentrate on your breathing and channel your soul energy at your heart you can feel the presence of the lord Shiva.
